چکیده

In this paper we present HIVE (2016), a parametrically designed interactive sound sculpture with embedded multichannel digital audio which explores the intersection of sculptural form and musical instrument design. We examine sculpture as an integral part of music composition and performance, expanding the definition of musical instrument to include the gestalt of loudspeakers, architectural spaces, and material form. After examining some related works, we frame HIVE as an interactive sculpture for musical expression. We then describe our design and production process, which hinges on the relationship between sound, space, and sculptural form. Finally, we discuss the installation and its implications.

‘Spheres of Influence’ - An Interactive Musical Work

In this paper we describe the development of an interactive artwork which incorporates both a musical composition and software which provides a visual and aural accompaniment. The system uses physical modeling to implement a type of virtual ‘sonic sculpture’ which responds to musical input in a way which appears naturalistic. This work forms part of a larger project to use art to explore the po...

The Expression of the Divine Order Through the Art of Sculpture in the Greek Art Religion (According to Hegel’s Lectures on Fine Art and his Phenomenology of Spirit)

The art of Greek sculpture is the most complete and appropriate visual form of expression of the divine in the Greek art religion and similar types in the earlier and later religions. In Greek sculpture, form and content are in balance and interact with each other. The Spirit and the material have no dominion over one another. The spirit (divine) recognizes as its proper home the human body, an...

Timbre morphing: near real-time hybrid synthesis in a musical installation

This paper presents an implementation of a near real-time timbre morphing signal processing system, designed to facilitate an element of ‘liveness’ and unpredictability in a musical installation. The timbre morpher is a hybrid analysis and synthesis technique based on Spectral Modeling Synthesis (an additive and subtractive modeling technique). The musical installation forms an interactive soun...

Designing for Conversational Interaction

In this paper we describe an interaction framework which classifies musicians’ interactions with virtual musical instruments into three modes: instrumental, ornamental and conversational. We argue that conversational interactions are the most difficult to design for, but also the most interesting. To illustrate our approach to designing for conversational interactions we describe the performanc...

You'll Never Walk Alone: Designing a Location- Based Soundtrack

Musical soundtracks have great potential to enhance mobile walking experiences such as tours and guides, much as they already do for films and games. They also raise new challenges for composers as the music must fit a given landscape and respond to walkers’ trajectories. We present a design for an interactive mobile soundtrack to accompany a visit to a sculpture park. We describe the motivatin...
